All the Best of Late-Night Television Can Be Found at DISH TV

One of America’s most time-honored traditions is the late-night talk show, which was first popularized in the early 1960s with the airing of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Nowadays, late-night TV viewing options have diversified significantly, with a variety of networks airing programs from which viewers can choose based upon their individual tastes and bedtimes!

Long beloved host David Letterman continues to grace the late-night TV screen in his CBS-sponsored program The Late Show With David Letterman, which airs every weeknight at 10:35c (Central time). Conan O’Brien‘s TBS program Conan—packed with celebrity interviews and ample comedy—likewise airs on weeknights, beginning at 10:00c.

Meanwhile, NBC’s late-night programming will be undergoing a number of exciting changes in the near future! Longtime host Jay Leno is retiring from his twenty-two year stint on The Tonight Show, and although he will be missed, there’s no need to worry—comedian and seasoned talk-show host Jimmy Fallon will step in to fill his shoes in the early months of 2014. Seth Meyers, the former head writer for the network’s long-running show Saturday Night Live (which, if you can believe it, is now in its thirty-eighth season!) will in turn take over Fallon’s position on Late Night.

Speaking of comedy, the ever-hilarious Jimmy Kimmel is still going strong as the host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which airs at 10:35c. The Late Late Show, hosted by Craig Ferguson, is perfect for laughter-seeking night owls, with a start time of 11:35c. And who can forget Comedy Central, which features the riveting political satire to be found on both The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, which air back-to-back Monday through Thursday at 10:00 and 10:30, respectively?

On weeknights at 10:00c, E! airs Chelsea Lately, which features one of America’s most successful female late-night hosts: Chelsea Handler, an accomplished comedian who is no stranger to the world of laughter. The world-famous Graham Norton Show, a BCC production, offers yet another hilarious take on celebrity culture (both within and outside of the United States), and with a start time of 11:35c is another great viewing option for those who like to stay up late.

Does gaining access to a wide selection of late-night viewing options seem like an impossible dream? Thanks to DISH TVs America’s Top 120 package, one can not only watch a variety of the programs listed above but also thousands of others aired across 120 DISH channels—and at an extremely affordable price! DISH TV also offers a number of DVR devices that allow you to record your favorite shows while other household members watch theirs, as well as to pre-set a recording device to, say, record a nighttime talk show when all of the late-night viewing catches up to you and you decide to crash early for a change!

Animation Takes the Nation

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but these days the TV is giving the oven a run for its money. While many perceive animated TV shows to be the exclusive province of kiddie entertainment, these days the opposite is true. In fact, animation has become an increasingly popular format for developing programs geared toward a wide range of viewers, including teenagers and adults seeking relaxing entertainment in the evening hours.

One of America’s favorite TV networks, FOX offers an array of animated programs for viewing during the prime time hours. The classic title The Simpsons, which has been on air since 1989, humorously depicts American life through the experiences of the wacky Simpsons family. Another of FOX’s most popular animated shows is Family Guy, whose success inspired creator Seth MacFarlane to develop the spin-off series The Cleveland Show, which also airs on FOX. American Dad!, too, explores family relations and American culture, though its humor is often situational rather than intentional, lending it a farcical affect. Finally, there’s King of the Hill (created by Mike Judge, the brains behind Beavis and Butt-head), which, unlike many other animated sitcoms, often takes the form of a prime-time drama, with the plot developing through the course of a season and culminating in a dramatic cliffhanger.

While FOX’s animated programming consists predominately of family-oriented shows, Comedy Central offers prime time viewing choices that explore characters and perspectives less frequently featured on the TV screen. The long-running series South Park hilariously takes on myriad social issues by examining them through the eyes of four elementary school-aged boys and their strange human and non-human friends. The critically acclaimed series Futurama, which is Matt Groening’s follow-up to The Simpsons, resituates the conventional workplace sitcom in a futuristic scenario, following the exploits of a group of co-workers through their zany exploits in space.

Cartoon Network offers several choices for prime time viewing, including the two Emmy-winning shows Adventure Time and Regular Show, both of which follow the adventures—and misadventures—of two best friends. Cartoon Network’s The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange has gained massive popularity, and thus a prime time slot, since its initial air date in 2012. Teen Titans Go!, which presents the DC Comics franchise in a humorous fashion, is shown several evenings each week during prime time as part of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation programming block.

It couldn’t possibly be easy—let alone affordable—to gain access to such a diverse array of prime time animated TV shows…or could it? In fact, DISH TV’s America’s Top 250 package includes all of the networks named above and more—247 more, to be exact—placing the power to watch any and all of you and your family’s favorite prime time cartoons at your fingertips!

Get Satellite is one of America’s oldest, largest and most respected providers of DISH TV satellite services, offering a great number of family friendly channels and a variety of channel packages to suit the tastes of every TV-watching member in the family.

The Food Network Offers Something for Every Type of Home Cook

They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and for good reason: food has always constituted an important aspect of family life. Mealtimes not only offer a perfect excuse for family members to break from their increasingly hectic everyday lives in order to spend time with one another, but also provide a great opportunity for home cooks to express their love by creating delicious meals for the entire family.

Many individuals’ culinary knowledge, abilities, and tastes are rooted in familial tradition—in time-honored recipes and preparation methods that have been passed down through generations of home cooks and served to generations of hungry men, women, and children. While there’s no reason to abandon your family’s tried-and-true lasagna recipe, The Food Network, available through DISH TV, offers hundreds of ways to expand your culinary horizons!

The Food Network offers something for every type of home cook. For those moms and dads who are looking for quick and easy weeknight meals, there’s Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals, which features an array of delicious dishes that can easily be prepared in thirty minutes or less. Another go-to program for those seeking to start simple in their kitchen experiments is Jeff Mauro’s Sandwich King, wherein viewers can learn to make a meal out of a sandwich, and a sandwich out of a meal!

To learn about regional foods and diversify your cooking, you can tune in to such programs as California-based Giada De Laurentiis’s Giada at Home, Paula Deen’s southern-food spectacular Paula’s Best Dishes, and Ree Drummond’s Pioneer Woman, which features down-home recipes designed for casual and elegant dinners alike. To learn how to cook a variety of international foods, one need only check out Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa, which features an assortment of French, British, Italian, and Asian dishes. And for those who prefer to do their cooking outdoors, there’s Bobby Flay’s Barbeque Addiction, wherein the grill-master himself takes on everything from down-home-style barbeque to elegant seafood dishes, all in the great outdoors!

What’s more is that The Food Network allows you and your family to travel to inspiring culinary destinations from the comfort of your own home. By tuning in to Sunny Anderson’s Home Made in America, for instance, you can join her as she travels through the United States sampling signature dishes prepared by home cooks just like you! The Food Network also features a number of competitive cooking shows sure to both inspire the home cook and entertain the entire family—from Chef Wanted With Anne Burrell, which offers an inside look at the culinary industry, to Cupcake Wars, wherein top American bakers square off for a huge prize!

The Food Network is included with a number of DISH TV packages, from the Dish FAMILY package—a delicious deal of over fifty DISH channels at the promotional price of $19.99 per month—to the America’s Everything Pak, which includes thirty-one commercial-free movie channels in addition to the 250 channels included in the America’s Top 250 package! Catch One of the Great Sci-Fi Shows of All Time on DISH TV

If you are a science fiction television fan and your existing DISH package doesn’t include BBC America, you are missing out on one the greatest and longest running science fiction television shows in the entire world: the BBC’s Doctor Who!

Doctor Who is a science fiction comedy/drama show about a mysterious and benevolent alien Time Lord known only as the Doctor. The last of his kind, the Doctor travels through time and space in his TARDIS, (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), which on the outside, appears a simple blue police call box. Luckily for the Doctor and his human companions who travel with him on his many adventures, the TARDIS is bigger on the inside than on the outside.

Doctor Who began as an educational television show in the United Kingdom in the 1963, and while it hasn’t always been on the air, it has still managed to accumulate over 700 episodes. The show was revived by television writer Russel T. Davies in 2005, and has been going strong ever since.

With such a long running show, it would be impossible for the same actor to play the role of the Doctor, so the show has a special science fiction notion that allows them to replace the actor from time to time. When the Doctor is grievously injured, he regenerates into a different person, but retains all his memories from before. The modern era has seen actors Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and now Matt Smith play the role. Matt Smith became the Doctor in 2010. Along with the frequent replacement of the Doctor’s actor, the Doctor’s trustworthy companion changes from time to time as well. Both moments make great jumping-on points for the show.

The Season 7 (or season 34, depending on where you count) premiere, airing March 30th on BBC America at 8pm ET, features the Doctor taking on a new companion to travel with him in time and space. The new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman has fans all over the world excited for her to take up the role, thanks to a teasing appearance in the last season. We can all expect the Doctor and his companion to cross wits with new and old foes alike.

With 50 years of stories, the Doctor isn’t short on old enemies, such as the robotic Daleks and Cybermen, many of whom have made appearances on the new version of the show. While the show wears its long history well, a new companion serves as an excellent jumping-on point for new fans of the series, young or old.

One of the greatest things about Doctor Who is that it’s written for the whole family, and while it features scary aliens and monsters, children the world over have delighted in being frightened by monsters like the Weeping Angels (if you see one, don’t blink!) or the spooky Silence. The show appeals to fans of all ages—a fact attested to by the show’s long run. Younger children might not be ready for its darker episodes, but pre-teens and teens will love the Doctor, and before long, their Christmas wish lists are sure to include toy Daleks and sonic screwdrivers of their very own.

Doctor Who has it all: wondrous sights, frightful scares, and hilarious jokes. While the show is produced in the UK, much of the humor crosses over, and the accents are easy comprehend by American audiences. Don’t let the foreign nature of the show scare you away, or its old age; there’s a very good reason that Doctor Who can be watched in nearly 50 countries! Call DISH today to upgrade your package to include BBC America, and don’t miss another moment of the Doctor’s adventures.

Have a Roving Family TV Night with Dish

Today’s families are busier than ever. From the heads of the household to the youngest children, days are packed to the brim with work, school, after-school activities, social obligations, and more. How can today’s families find time to connect and spend time together?

In the past, families gathered and bonded around the television for decades, and it’s a time-tested method – but it’s no longer necessary to gather around the television at a specific time and a specific room just to catch your favorite shows!

Thanks to Hopper from DISH TV, everyone in the house can break free from the broadcast schedule and watch television on your own time, whenever it suits them. Seven PM might be when the kids’ soccer game ends, but with Hopper, you won’t have to miss your favorite shows, and neither will they.

These days, televisions can be found in nearly every room of the house, with each member of the family watch and record their own shows from Hopper thanks to Joey, DISH’s multi-room extenders. But instead of always allowing your family to scatter through the house, you can use these devices to bring your family together again.

Here’s how it works: everyone in the family selects one show, up to an hour long, from their list of favorite programs. Make a list a week ahead, and make sure Hopper is programmed to record the latest from each show. Don’t worry about filling up Hopper – it has space for up to 2,000 hours of television, movies, and sports!

The hard part might be picking a night of the week where everyone can get together, but once you’ve done that, you can start your roaming TV party. Make up some snacks that are low-mess, like popcorn or other finger foods, and get ready to move. Tonight, you’ll be gathering together to watch each family member’s favorite family-friendly show in their own rooms!

Bring extra chairs, bean bags, pillows, or just squeeze together onto the bed and watch the recorded show on Joey. Now, your favorite show might not be your child’s favorite, but thanks to Hopper’s ability to pause and rewind shows, you can stop the show and answer anyone’s questions about the characters or what’s happened in past episodes. This feature comes in especially handy, especially for long-running shows with plenty of back story.

It’s important to lay some ground rules early on that everyone can be respectful of the others’ choices; the old saying about not saying anything if you don’t have something nice to say might be a good one here. Questions are good, but criticism wouldn’t be fair, so everyone should try to keep an open mind about the viewing choices. And who knows – you might find out you’ve been missing some really great television!

Once you wrap up your first show of the night, everybody gathers up their seats and you can move on to the next family member’s show and the next room. Watch and repeat for a fun and very different night in the home, sure to be filled with laughter, excitement, and suspense, depending on what shows everyone picks!

Thanks to Hopper and Joey, you can bring the family back together, on your own terms, around the televisions in your home, and in the process, you can learn more about each other, despite your hectic lives.

With satellite services from DISH TV, you also have access to cutting-edge DVR technology. Record your favorite movies and shows and watch at your leisure. And with a Hopper and Joey from DISH, you can record 3 DISH channels at once and watch, rewind, pause and record your programs from any connected TV in your house!

With the addition of a DISH Sling Adapter to your DISH services, you can enjoy your favorite DISH channels and programs while away from home. Watch movies, local news, live programs, or recorded shows on your computer’s browser or mobile device anywhere you can connect to the internet.
